Virtu unveiled at Deltares with ATES

October 11th, 2018

Naked Energy is delighted to announce the completion of its first large-scale ‘Virtu’ system at Deltares in the Netherlands.  ‘ATES’ ‘Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage’ is an innovation project supported by the Climate-KIC, to demonstrate inter-seasonal storage with aquifers and state of the art solar thermal technology.

The Virtu – ATES system consists of two natural aquifers approximately 120m apart. By carefully controlling the solar energy balance the water in the aquifers can be used to heat and cool the Deltares buildings throughout the entire year reducing reliance on conventional heating and cooling from grid-based fossil fuels. It is anticipated that the solar energy outputs will be sufficient to provide all of the heat and hot water necessary at the campus for the entire year.

Aquifer thermal energy storage is already quite widespread in the Netherlands with the potential for dramatic growth.
